Subject: Nuclear Inspection of Feedwater Heaters
On 23 June 1999, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued an Information Notice. This IN (
http://www.nrc.gov/NRC/GENACT/GC/IN/1999/in99019.html ) deals with a shell side rupture of a feedwater heater. Similar incidents have occurred sporadically in operating stations. During the analysis of the failure and the corrective action plan, each operator determined that an inspection program for examining the thickness of the walls of the feedwater heaters is necessary. While the IN requires no specific action or response, 10 CFR 50.65 requires industry-wide operating experience to be considered when performing periodic evaluations of current practices. In each of the cited incidents, the operators had no inspection program for examining wall thickness of feedwater heaters.
